Posidonia – the lungs of the Adriatic beneath your boat

As you cruise and unwind in the coves of the Adriatic, preserving our marine ecosystem is essential for keeping our waters beautiful and safe for future voyages. One of the most delicate parts of this environment is Posidonia oceanica (Neptune grass)—a strictly protected seagrass that carpets our seabed.

Here is a quick overview of why Posidonia matters so much and how smart anchoring habits can help prevent its destruction.

Why Posidonia is Essential to Our Ecosystem

Posidonia isn't just sea weed—it’s a flowering plant that plays a critical role in keeping our sea healthy:

Oxygen Production & Carbon Capture: A single square meter of this seagrass produces vast amounts of oxygen while storing carbon dioxide.

A Haven for Marine Life: Posidonia meadows serve as a nursery, shelter, and feeding ground for well over a hundred species of fish, crustaceans, and shellfish.

Coastal Erosion Protection: Dense meadows soften the impact of waves and currents, keeping our beaches from washing away.

Note: Posidonia grows extremely slowly—just a few centimeters a year. When a heavy anchor and chain tear up its roots, recovery takes decades.

4 Easy Steps for Safe & Eco-Friendly Anchoring

We encourage you to keep these simple rules in mind every time you drop anchor:
  1. Anchor Only in Sand (Light Spots) Always check the seabed visually before dropping anchor:
    • Dark areas indicate Posidonia meadows—please avoid them.
    • Light spots indicate sand—this is the ideal, safe anchoring ground where your anchor holds best anyway.
  2. Use Mooring Buoys Whenever Possible If a bay offers an organized buoy field, always choose a buoy. These systems are anchored to the seabed in ways that leave surrounding marine life unharmed.
  3. Drop Anchor While Gently Backing Up Avoid piling up your chain. Moving slowly in reverse while lowering the anchor ensures the chain lays out flat on the sand, minimizing drag across the seabed.
  4. Weigh Anchor Vertically When departing, motor your boat directly over the anchor before hauling it up. This lifts the anchor straight up without dragging or plowing through the seabed.
Protecting a clean, thriving sea is a shared responsibility for everyone on the water. Thank you for helping us safeguard the Adriatic by following these simple practices.

Wishing you fair winds and smooth sailing!
