Cleaning the Punat Bay and nearby beaches
Each spring, members of both local and diving clubs from all around Croatia meet in Punat. With the support of organizers and the local economy, teams clean section after section of the Punat Bay and nearby beaches so that the sea can breathe freely once again.
Many volunteers always participate in the action: elementary school students, fishermen, excursion boat owners, marina and shipyard employees…
The fact that less and less litter is collected every year is very gratifying, leaving more time for various educational subjects, book promotions, exhibitions presented by the organizers.
In addition, our divers also regulary clean the seabed in the marina and service area throughout the year.
Here are some ways that all boaters can contribute to reducing litter in the sea:

Here are some ways that all boaters can contribute to reducing litter in the sea:
- REPLACE SINGLE-USE PLASTIC - abandon single-use PVC shopping bags and opt for canvas bags or durable bags for multiple uses. Quit the use of single-use plastic tableware such as plates, cutlery, cups and straws and replace them with better and more durable alternatives. These will be heavier and harder to be swept off by the wind. Use bowls to serve potato chips, cookies and fruit and dispose of their light packaging (plastic bags and fruit nets) into the waste bin, as they are easily blown off the deck. Make sure all deck equipment is stored correctly away or tied up, so it doesn't end up overboard.
- USE A BILGE SKIMMER - it is common to find some oil in bilge waters, which is pumped out by the bilge pump. To prevent pollution of boat surroundings, a sponge is placed in the bilge to attract and lock oil and fuel, i.e. to purify the bilge water and make it safe for the environment. That sponge is called a bilge skimmer, and you can get it at the Nautical store in the marina.
- EMPTY YOUR WASTEWATER TANK FOR FREE - do not empty it at the open sea, for the soap water and detergents are harmful to sea life. Empty your wastewater tank, it is a quick procedure, and it is free of charge, both for resident vessels and boats in transit. Schedule your wastewater disposal at least one day ahead at marina reception or via e-mail support@marina-punat.hr.
