Visit the centre of Krk’s maritime heritage

Krk has always been a centre of sailing and rowing in various boat models. We are proud that our island has joined the project of preserving maritime heritage in two neighbouring countries.

Primorje in Slovenia and Istria and Kvarner in Croatia are very attractive tourist destinations for yachtsmen. That is why we designed and presented joint tourist products which will attract visitors throughout the year and raise awareness of the importance of preserving the maritime tradition. The “Mala Barka” (Little boat project) connects the Slovenian and Croatian coastal area with a unique tourist offer based on the tradition and story of maritime heritage.

This summer in the city of Krk, an Interpretation Centre of Krk’s maritime heritage was open in the old city centre. The long and rich maritime tradition of this region is presented in a contemporary and interactive way.

The Krk Interpretation Centre has a scale model area equipped with a workshop and an exhibition area with numerous exhibits. Renowned and awarded Krk ship scale model maker and collector Mr. Željko Skomeršić takes care of the exhibition.

The exhibition area contains interpretation panels elaborated by topics, which show the historical overview of Krk’s maritime development. The central area holds the collected material and scale modes from Mr. Skomeršić’s collection and workshop. Various usable items, documents, ship equipment, tools, records, books and photographs are displayed.

The anteroom to the scale model area is dedicated to education on the vessel crafting process. There is a children’s drawing table for the youngest visitors to let their imagination run wild. After touring the exhibition and talking to the scale model maker, the children have the chance to express themselves visually and design their own ship.

The area is enhanced with multimedia content: didactic application with sailing simulations and projections of photographs and videos from traditional vessel regattas and sailor’s meetings.

The Interpretation Centre of Krk’s maritime heritage is open from Mondays to Sundays in the morning from 8 to 12 and in the afternoons from 19 to 21 or by arrangement.
